Traditional interim storage at the tannery

The flayed hides are salted and initially stored in a cool environment in the slaughterhouse. They are still covered with hair and are about 8-10 mm thick.

Since tanneries prefer to process entire barrels, they wait until enough hides are collected and buy them entirely. Tanneries pay by the weight.

Another method, processing fresh hides, has also gained ground. In this process, the hides are hung and stored at very cold temperatures.
